     Osho Meditation Center & Multiversity~ Presents ~

Introduction to the Practice of Meditation

    What Is Meditation?

There are four stages of human consciousness: ordinary thinking, contemplation, concentration and meditation. Meditation means going beyond the mind or no-mind — not even concentration is allowed. Mind itself is not allowed to be! That is why meditation cannot be grasped by mind.

Up to concentration mind has a reach, an approach. Mind can understand concentration, but mind cannot understand meditation. In concentration, mind is allowed to be at one point. In meditation, even that point is taken away. In ordinary thinking, all directions are open. In contemplation, only one direction is open. In concentration, only one point is open — no direction.

In meditation, even that point is not open: mind is not allowed to be.

So in ordinary thinking, mind is allowed to move anywhere; in contemplation, it is allowed only in one direction, all other directions are cut off. In concentration, it is not allowed to move even in one direction; it is allowed only to concentrate on one point. And in meditation, mind is not allowed at all. Meditation is no-mind. It is wide open consciousness, free to perceive infinity.

5361_10208999991942874_5585859470125996691_nWe cannot see clearly, because we are so full of expectations, hopes, desires. Our eyes are covered with many layers of confusion and programming: we need a deep cleansing of our eyes before we can see what really is. That’s what meditation does. It lets the thoughts disappear, the hopes disappear, the desires disappear. Then there is clarity, then your eyes are perfect mirrors. Only then, in that silent state of your vision, will you know the secrets of the beyond.

The beauty of this process lies in its simplicity. There are no complicated rituals. No expensive equipments. No special buildings. No specific religious belief necessary to receive all the benefits. All you need is the willingness and discipline to practice everyday and start manifesting miracles too amazing to describe in words!

    What Happens When You Meditate?

“Scientists study it. Doctors recommend it. Millions of Americans – many of whom don’t even own crystals – practice it everyday.

    Why? Because meditation works…”

Concentration exercises makes the mind more powerful. Meditation does not make the mind strong but it takes us beyond the mind. Meditation is all about dis-identifying with the mind. Meditation is to be alert about our thoughts and witnessing our desires rather than indulging in them.

Meditation is to know oneself as one is. It is seeing our real face with out any mask. When we practice meditation then we are bound to come across the dark side of our nature which we are suppressing in our unconscious mind. But through regular practice we can transform these dark aspects into our most powerful assets, our personal treasures.

Take a look at the picture below to see how our current medical science understands meditation:
a Miracle spiritual and physical health by learning to  focus  the mind,

            Meditation for Busy People

offers simple strategies to reduce tension, minimize chronic stress, and quickly relax and unwind.

Nobody needs meditation more than people who have no time to meditate. These busy people may have tried meditation but given it up, as it seems so difficult to integrate into a hectic lifestyle.

Most traditional meditation techniques were developed thousands of years ago for people living a very different lifestyle than today. Few people today find it easy to just sit down and relax.

    Meditation for Busy People

is filled with methods that can actually be integrated into everyday life. A morning commute becomes a centering exercise, and the street noises outside an apartment window in the city become an aid rather than a distraction to finding the silent space within. Both active and passive meditation techniques are covered, and the aim of all the techniques is to teach the practitioner how to find the stillness in the storm of everyday life. Many methods are specially designed to be integrated into the reader’s everyday routines, so that they soon can tackle even the most hectic day with an attitude of relaxed calm and playfulness.strengthen willpower and deepen awareness of consumption in a structured, supportive environment. No previous meditation experience required.
Some other more “understandable” benefits that have been proven are:

Regular meditation rapidly increases concentration, focus and strengthens will power.

    Enhances energy, strength and vigor.

Dramatically builds self confidence and self esteem.

    Reduces stress and tension.

Increases serotonin which influences moods and behavior. Low levels of serotonin are associated with depression, headaches and insomnia.

Reduces anxiety attacks as it lowers the levels of blood lactate.

    Helps keep blood pressure normal.

    Helps reduce heart disease etc.

But the real reason why ALL spiritual traditions and religions recommend some form of meditation is because it helps us transcend the ego mind and connect with our higher self. Meditation is the beginning of all deep spiritual work. It is the primary discipline for obtaining a state of mind that is calm and clear, free of noise, and thus ready to receive guidance from higher realms of being.

The purpose of meditation is to become one with the Source. And the only way you will ultimately achieve that unity is through pure silence and absolute stillness of mind… When you are starting off, you can use myriad of tools like music, mantras, hypnosis etc to help you reach that level of absolute stillness, for it is definitely not the easiest thing to do, but its very important to remember that these are ultimately also a barrier towards reaching the final destination of pure stillness, pure void, pure meditation. Those tools just like a crutch, great when you have a broken leg, but when you are healed, definitely not something you want to hold on to forever.

    Benefits include:

    De- stress with Meditation

    Meditation has two important benefits:

Meditation prevents stress from getting into the system Meditation releases accumulated stress that is in the system

Both of these happen simultaneously, leaving one refreshed and joyful.

    Physical Benefits of Meditation

With meditation, the physiology undergoes a change and every cell in the body is filled with more prana (energy). This results in joy, peace, enthusiasm as the level of prana in the body increases.

    On a physical level, meditation:

Lowers high blood pressure Lowers the levels of blood lactate, reducing anxiety attacks Decreases any tension-related pain, such as, tension headaches, ulcers, insomnia, muscle and joint problems Increases serotonin production that improves mood and behavior Improves the immune system Increases the energy level, as you gain an inner source of energy

    Mental Benefits of Meditation

Meditation brings the brainwave pattern into an Alpha state that promotes healing. The mind becomes fresh, delicate and beautiful. With regular practice of meditation:

Anxiety decreases Emotional stability improves Creativity increases Happiness increases Intuition develops Problems become smaller Meditation sharpens the mind by gaining focus and expands through relaxation A sharp mind without expansion causes tension, anger and frustration An expanded consciousness without sharpness can lead to lack of action/progress The balance of a sharp mind and an expanded consciousness brings perfection

Meditation makes you aware – that your inner attitude determines your happiness.

    Other Benefits of Meditation

Emotional steadiness and harmony: it cleanses and nourishes you from within and calms you, whenever you feel overwhelmed, unstable, or emotionally shut down.

Meditation brings harmony in creation: when you meditate, you are in the space of vastness, calmness and joy and this is what you emit into the environment, bringing harmony to the Creation/planet.

Consciousness evolves: with the assimilation of meditation into daily life, your consciousness evolves and in time, is able to experience the higher and refined states of consciousness.

When your consciousness evolves and expands, the disturbances in your life become negligible. Anger and disappointments become fleeting emotions that occur momentarily and then vanish. You start living in ‘the moment’ and let go of ‘the past’.

Personal Transformation: meditation can bring about a true personal transformation. As you learn more about yourself, you’ll naturally want to discover more about the mystery of life, this universe, etc. Then the questions that arise in the mind are – What is the meaning of Life? What is its purpose? What is this world, what is love, what is knowledge…?

Once these questions arise, know that you are very fortunate. These questions need to be understood; you cannot find the answers in books. As you live through answering them you’ll witness that life transformation to a richer level.

    Cosmic consciousness dawns in you

With the assimilation of meditation into daily life, the fifth state of consciousness*, called cosmic consciousness, dawns. Cosmic consciousness – is to perceive the whole cosmos as part of oneself.

When you perceive the world as a part of yourself, love flows strongly between the world and you. This love empowers you to bear the opposing forces and the disturbances in your life. Anger and disappointments become fleeting emotions that occur momentarily and then vanish. You start living in ‘the moment’ and let go of ‘the past’.

The confluence of knowledge, understanding and practice makes life complete. When you grow into higher states of consciousness, you become beautiful yet strong – a soft, delicate and beautiful blossom capable of accommodating different values in life without any conditions.

    How to get the benefits

To experience the benefits of meditation, regular practice is necessary. It takes only a few minutes every day. Once imbibed into the daily routine, meditation becomes the best part of your day!

Meditation is like a seed. When you cultivate a seed with love, the more it blossoms. Similarly, the sapling of consciousness is within you. It needs to be nurtured with simple meditation techniques. Some palm trees yield in three years, some in ten years. And those that aren’t nurtured – never yield! They simply exist.

Busy people from all backgrounds are grateful to pause and enjoy a refreshing few minutes of meditation each day. Dive deep into yourself and enrich your life.
